A defining development in BasiGo’s trajectory is the commencement of local assembly of its Ma3e electric vans in Kenya. The vehicles are being produced in partnership with Associated Vehicle Assemblers (AVA), using complete vehicle kits assembled locally in Mombasa.
According to official reporting, the first batch of 22 locally assembled units is scheduled for delivery between April and May 2026, marking a structural transition from import-based deployment to domestic production capacity. The Ma3e platform is designed for high-utilisation transport applications such as public transport, school mobility, corporate fleets, and shuttle services, offering a range of up to 300 kilometres per charge.
This development is widely regarded as a foundational step in Kenya’s emerging EV manufacturing ecosystem, signalling a move from demonstration projects to scalable industrial operations.
Scaling Infrastructure and Fleet Deployment
Alongside manufacturing progress, BasiGo has continued to expand its operational footprint within Kenya’s transport sector. Pilot operations across urban and intercity routes have validated both vehicle performance and the supporting charging infrastructure, enabling broader commercial deployment.
Industry reports indicate that this model has generated a growing pipeline of demand, with hundreds of vehicles reserved by transport operators, reflecting increasing confidence in electric mobility as a viable alternative to diesel-based fleets.
At the infrastructure level, the company continues to scale charging capacity and service networks, a critical factor in ensuring uptime and commercial viability for high-frequency transport systems.
Carbon Markets and Climate Finance Recognition
In parallel with its operational expansion, BasiGo has reached a significant milestone in climate finance. In April 2026, the company’s electric bus programme received Gold Standard certification, becoming the first verified electric bus carbon project in Africa under this standard.
The certification validates emissions reductions achieved through the replacement of diesel buses with electric vehicles, supported by real time telematics tracking of energy consumption and distance travelled. These verified reductions are expected to be monetised through carbon credit markets, introducing an additional revenue stream for electric mobility infrastructure.
