GRAB’S CONTINUED MOMENTUM WITH ELECTRIC MOBILITY AND STRATEGIC ACQUISITIONS

Since being named Startup of the Year at the Global Startup Awards in 2016, Grab has continued to strengthen its position as one of Southeast Asia’s most influential technology platforms.

Two announcements  in early 2026 offer a clear snapshot of how the former GSA winner is positioning itself for its next phase of growth.

GRAB PARTNERS WITH GAC INTERNATIONAL ACCELERATing EV ADOPTION IN SOUTHEAST ASIA

In early January 2026, Grab announced a comprehensive strategic partnership with GAC International to accelerate the deployment of electric vehicles (EVs across Southeast Asia. Under the agreement, the companies plan to introduce an initial 20,000 high-performance EVs across key markets, including Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam, and Thailand.

The partnership focuses on system integration and initially covers three EV models designed to meet the demands of the Southeast Asian market: Aion Y, Aion V, and Aion ES. As part of the collaboration, the Grab app will be integrated directly into the vehicle displays, enabling seamless transmission of navigation and safety data and eliminating the need for drivers to switch between devices while driving.

According to Grab, regional EV sales grew by approximately 50% in 2024, underscoring the rapid expansion of the electric vehicle market across Southeast Asia. The initiative aligns with Grab’s broader sustainability strategy, which aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2040.

To support the transition toward low- and zero-emission mobility, Grab has rolled out several complementary initiatives, including:

  • Partnerships with regional charging networks such as EBOOST and Charge+, offering preferential charging rates to driver-partners

  • An “Eco-Friendly Ride” option that allows passengers to request greener transportation at no additional cost

  • The launch of GrabTaxi Electric, the first fully electric on-demand taxi fleet officially recognized by the Philippines’ Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB)

The collaboration with GAC International marks another step in Grab’s efforts to scale sustainable mobility solutions across the region, while simultaneously improving vehicle integration, operational efficiency, and the overall driver experience.

SCALING DELIVERY EFFICIENCY WITH THE ACQUISITION OF INFERMOVE

Alongside the collaboration announcement, Grab acquired China‑based AI robotics firm Infermove, a specialist in autonomous robotics solutions, aiming to improve their delivery capabilities across Southeast Asia’s competitive ecosystem.

In a statement to Reuters, Grab said the move reflects its ongoing efforts to develop and integrate Infermove’s technology out of Singapore as part of its wider logistics strategy, with the goal of enhancing customer and partner experiences through automation. The acquisition underscores Grab’s focus on AI‑driven automation as a key component of its future delivery network.
